52 Ways #3

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…..(cue Victorian carolers).

Yes, Christmas is in the air and our thoughts turn to a nice gift for our pastor and other members of the pastoral staff.  I know the backroom counters will be overflowing with cookies, fudge, and assorted holiday sweets by now so it is time to put on our creative thinking caps.  Rather than packing up a few pounds of peanut brittle for your pastor (because by the end of the holidays he will be packing on a few pounds of his own!) try calling his Administrative Assistant (PC for secretary) and ask her what books or periodicals he’s been wanting for his library; order a few and have them sent directly to the church.  This works for other pastors on staff as well.

There is something great about holding an actual book in your hands, especially if it is an older book that you’ve searched the out of print archives to find.

When my husband was a new graduate from seminary he pined for a “Kittel”, officially titled Theological Dictionary of the New Testament – a 10 volume set written by Gerhard Kittel.  It was very pricey at the time, as it still is, actually.  When the day came that he was finally able to purchase the set there was great rejoicing in the land.  Over the course of more than three decades he used and appreciated his Kittel set quite often and with great satisfaction.  My husband recently gifted that Kittel set to a young pastor he had mentored through Bible College.  It was received with great joy.  Both the giver and the receiver felt blessed

I’m sure there are books and periodicals that your own pastor would enjoy.  Take a minute to find out and consider placing an order this week; just in time for a nice Christmas treat – that will expand his mind not his waistline.
