This is an easy way to care for your pastor and others. Simply tell him that you appreciate him and why. The why is important. We all love to be told what we are doing right, don’t we? Your pastor and other leadership and staff members are no different. Giving a why shows thoughtfulness and sincerity.
Check out the difference:
“Hey Jeff, I appreciate ya buddy!”
Um, okay, thank you.
Be more specific, like this:
“Hey Jeff, I really appreciate you! I love the fact that you make yourself available to everyone after the service and take the time to pray with people. Thank you!”
See? How easy was that? You don’t need to lie in wait for your pastor after the service in order to share your Top Ten List David Letterman style. Just a quick word while you’re going out the door is sufficient.
Don’t stop at the pastor though. There are so many people involved in making church services run smoothly. Look around you. Do you see other pastors on staff? Don’t be afraid to approach them, even if you don’t remember their name at that moment, and speak words of appreciation. And please don’t limit yourself to pastors only. Support staff and volunteers you see on a regular basis would appreciate hearing how much their service means to you.

Don’t underestimate the power of affirmation and appreciation and the difference your words could have in someone’s life. It is waaaaaay better than a Christmas fruitcake – for sure!
