I sat down with my checkbook and calculator today and added up all of my expenses at Walmart and Target for the months of July through mid-September. I wrote a blog post in July titled Walmart and Minimalism – not a good match where I shared, with chagrin and horror, that the first six months of the year I’d spent a little more than $1,300 at Walmart and $390 at Target. In just six months! I made a vow to only purchase needs at those two stores in the future and not give in to any impulsive wants. Well, I have to report that I’ve been pretty successful. In the past three months I’ve spent $277.95 at Walmart and $91.08 at Target. I even had two of my grandsons staying with me for six weeks during that time! I held firm and didn’t give in to all of their consumer demands. I did give in to some of them, however, but that’s real life. When you are 4-years-old Sponge Bob sunglasses are a necessity, I guess. Still, I’d like to see that number even smaller, which will be difficult as the next three months include Thanksgiving, four birthdays, and Christmas. Hmmm, I’ve got to put on my frugal hat and make a plan that includes meaningful gifts without blowing the budget!
And, just because I’ve been a little quiet on the blogging front the past few weeks doesn’t mean my brain isn’t full of ideas! In fact, I’m currently working on a very long series that will begin October 1, 2014 and end September 30,2015. It is called 365 Simple. I will post 365 minimal/simple/frugal tips, recipes, and DIY projects, and even throw in a few philosophical and spiritual thoughts for good measure. I am feeling excited, inspired, and challenged – all at the same time!
How about you? Has anyone been inspired to (try) to live a minimal/simple/frugal life too? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
